HTC Desire does not get Gingerbread

So there is some bad news for the HTC Desire owners, the original Desire will not be getting the Gingerbread update as HTC claim it has insufficient memory. So you will not be getting Gingerbread via the official channels.
Here is the official statement from HTC:

"Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you."

So sorry, they apparently tried and could not deliver and want you to now buy a newer device which supports Gingerbread. As stated by GSM Arena the HTC Wildfire S has a 600MHz CPU, 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM and it can run Gingerbread. The HTC Desire has a 1GHz processor, 576MB RAM and 512MB ROM and a higher resolution and I do not think the higher resolution would make all THAT much of a difference for HTC to not be able to get Gingerbread and HTC Sense running well on the Desire.

So you are left with either waiting for an unofficial Gingerbread release, sticking with Froyo or getting a new device which has Gingerbread.
